The February temps may be cooler, but that doesn’t stop the flurry of fun in the High Country! This month’s blog is inspired by St. Valentine; you’ll find just the right amount of sweet ideas to share with a loved one or friend. We’ll be covering well-known spas, nearby wineries, and a few artsy activities such as candle-making. We hope you enjoy reading this post as much as we enjoyed pulling it together.
Make It a Spa Day
When pampering is on the agenda, we’re fortunate to have sought-after services nearby. Westglow Luxury Resort & Spa in Blowing Rock was once the manor of famed artist Elliott Daingerfield, reimagined as a boutique lodge, restaurant, spa, and salon. Recognized as the top domestic destination spa by Travel+Leisure in 2025, treatments include massages, facials, nails, hair, waxing, skin, and Vichy therapies. The property is also home to a sauna, steam room, and pool, with mountain-view sun decks.
With a legacy dating back to the 1800s, Chetola Resort has long been a haven for healing and relaxation; the name Chetola means “haven of rest” in Cherokee. This Blowing Rock getaway is also home to an award-winning hotel and wedding venue. The resort is also known for its Orvis endorsement with expert fly fishing guides and instructors. Personalized spa treatments include massage, facial treatments, nails, hair, organic skincare, and more.
See the World Through Rose-Colored Glasses
Oenophiles will be pleased to find several wineries in our region. Starting closest to home, Banner Elk Winery & Villa offers tastings and tours, a private retreat, and an idyllic setting. As the first commercial winery established in Avery and Watauga counties, their award-winning wines are known for honoring the Blue Ridge Mountains while conveying “the delicate nuance and subtle flavors of the fruit.”
Known for its ambiance and accolades, family-owned Grandfather Vineyard & Winery on the Watauga River is another enchanting destination. Plan your visit around their live musical lineup, behind-the-scenes tours, and seasonal tastings. We recommend adding a cabana rental and inviting several friends. For those making plans for Valentine’s weekend, they’re hosting Barrel & Boots: an Après-Ski Tasting on February 15 (limited number of tickets).
A Crafty Valentine Offering
Include a token of your affection by making something for your sweetheart. We suggest booking a session at Banner Elk Soap & Candle Co. They offer a candle pouring class on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays at 11 am (online reservations are required). The class includes curated vessels and 14 signature scents. Private classes are also available.
For those with an interest in acrylic painting, Open Paint sessions at The Drawing Room in Banner Elk are flexible and fun. Aspiring artists choose their own design from a range of examples and receive detailed instructions for the endeavor. At this time, open paint is offered Tuesday-Thursday from 10 am–5 pm (open to adults and children).
If you take advantage of any of the activities featured in today’s post, we’d love to hear about your experience. Tag us on social media, @ElkRiverClub on Instagram or Elk River Club on Facebook.
