Fall Tennis at Elk River Club
Staying active at Elk River Club is better with friends, and our Har-Tru clay courts are ready for you to play your best match. The reasons tennis lovers are drawn to the game range from its fitness benefits to the thrill of a little friendly competition, the longevity of the sport and socializing in the sunshine. When you combine October temperatures (highs in the low 60s) and the show-stopping beauty of our community in the fall, it doesn’t take much convincing to pull a game together. Playing Into the Fall
We know that tennis comes with many health perks, such as stronger bones, lower stress and even weight loss. From those working on their tennis game to couples who are drawn to the sport for its fitness benefits, tennis can be more than a spring or summer sport. Especially in the Western North Carolina mountains, Elk River Club residents have the luxury of playing tennis into the fall. Breathing in the crisp mountain air and getting the body moving is an autumn treat for the senses.
Har Tru Courts
We’ve covered the benefits of our Har Tru Courts in a recent blog post—the surface promotes core footwork and balance skills, develops strength, fitness, and endurance, and reduces common tennis injuries. Add to that list yet another plus: Har Tru courts dry in a matter of minutes after a light rain shower and often in just a couple of hours after heavy rain, thanks to the court surface and slope. More days to play is a score for our residents!
Our Director of Tennis
Elk River Club’s Director of Tennis, Harold “H” Wetzel, tailors each lesson to facilitate a player’s progress while also keeping the experience positive. Wetzel played #1 singles and #1 doubles four years in a row at Upsala College in East Orange. He is undeniably enthusiastic—his approach was influenced by his involvement in Charles Lundgren’s “Camp Racquet” and Project Jersey (a tennis program for elite tournament players). Young players also benefit from “H’s” personalized approach, especially considering time on the tennis court for little ones is excellent exercise with a lower risk of injury compared to high-contact sports.
