The spring, summer and fall temps you’ll find at Elk River Club make meeting a friend for tennis even more of a treat. In April, highs in the low 60s, warm but comfortable summer days in the 70s, and mild fall temperatures settling back down to the low 60s again in October set the stage for a refreshing day of play. Our Har-Tru courts are a noteworthy amenity for those searching for a community that offers tennis in Banner Elk. Covering more than 1,200-acre acres, our Blue Ridge Mountain retreat attracts visitors and members from around the globe.
The Club is also home to the state’s first signature Jack Nicklaus golf course encompassing 35 scenic acres of fairways, 19 greens and 75 tees, a 30-stall Equestrian Center, a private, on-premise airport, pool complex, fly fishing, neighborhood parks, trails and more. There is also much excitement around Pickleball launching in June 2022. The USA Pickleball Association describes the sport perfectly: “Fun, social and friendly. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.”
Today’s post explores the benefits of playing tennis and what makes the Har-Tru courts at Elk River Club ideal.
Power Up Your Health With Tennis
Tennis is a full-body workout with many physical, mental and social benefits. A recent Tennis Connected article emphasizes the following positive impacts:
- Brain boosting, as it “improves critical thinking and mental alertness.”
- Reduces fracture risk by “enhancing your flexibility, coordination, and balance.”
- Lowers risk of heart disease—“helps strengthen your heart by improving the amount of oxygen supply and carbon dioxide release.”
- Weight loss benefits through “a real cardio workout as it allows you to run, swing, and pivot.”
- Vitamin D exposure “boosts a more robust immune system, reduces cancer risk, and improves heart health.”
- Mental health benefits, as “the social interaction with fellow players will help boost your mental health, thus reducing depression among older adults.”
Tennis in Banner Elk: Har-Tru Bliss
Playing on a Har-Tru clay court is love at first swing. The courts are known for their safety benefits and being significantly cooler—up to 20 percent. Har-Tru reports players find their courts are conducive to promoting core footwork and balance as they develop strength, fitness and endurance. Additionally, their soft, sliding surface lowers the risk of tennis injuries, and the slower ball speed makes for a more enjoyable game. We value being members’ favorite place to play tennis in Banner Elk and prioritize maintaining a pristine environment.
Our Director of Tennis
Our Director of Tennis, Harold “H” Wetzel, played #1 singles and #1 doubles four years in a row at Upsala College in East Orange, NJ. He cites his involvement in Charles Lundgren’s “Camp Racquet” and Project Jersey (a tennis program for elite tournament players) as impacting his approach. “H” describes his teaching style, saying, “I try to keep my lessons geared to the success of each individual student so they have a positive experience that will keep them coming back to the courts.” You’ll come to know him by his enthusiasm and playful nature.
