This March in the High Country, there’s a feeling of wintry play as nearby ski resorts are open for recreation into the month (weather permitting). At the same time, Easter and spring activities dance into view on the mountain. It won’t be long before there are Easter egg hunts, park ranger workshops, farmer’s markets, train rides, and more on the Western North Carolina calendar. In today’s post, we’re embracing the best of March in our region.
Squeeze in Another Day of Snow Sports
There’s still time to visit Sugar Mountain Ski Resort, the state’s largest ski area, covering 125 acres with 20 trails, night skiing, ice skating, tubing, and more. Early in the month (March 7-8), they’ve planned their Richard T. Trundy Memorial Sugar Cup Competition. There’s also an Easter Egg hunt for children 12 and under (March 8). The winner takes home a ‘26-‘27 season pass, and costume contest categories include most creative, most imaginative, and most colorful.
Over at the highest ski area in the Eastern U.S., Beech Mountain Resort is open through March 14, 2026. Take advantage of its 17 trails, terrain parks, tubing, night skiing, and more. With a panoramic backdrop, their mountaintop restaurant and bar, 5,506’, is accessible by chairlift. Their Premier Mountain Guide offerings may also be of interest; perks include a Personal Ski/Snowboard Guide, premium rentals, priority lift line access, private lounge, reserved parking, and a private lunch.
Make It A Cappella
Yale University’s Spizzwinks, the world’s oldest underclassman a cappella group, will be performing at Banner Elk Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 19, at 6 p.m. Audiences rave about their high-energy take on jazz standards, pop hits, rock ballads, and Broadway tunes. The concert is part of BE•PRESents, a series of music and arts productions presented by Banner Elk Presbyterian Church for the entire community to enjoy. Admission is free, with donations collected to support their tour and educational outreach.
Adventure on the Big Screen
If you’re due for a dose of creativity and adventurous inspiration, the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour is coming to Boone, NC, March 19 - March 21, 2026, at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. The event is one of North Carolina’s largest screenings, and stories highlight groundbreaking expeditions, journeys to remote places, and trailblazing adventures. On Friday and Saturday night, festivities also include live music.
