The morning sun reflects off smooth pockets of the rippling Elk River. The sound of a Tufted-Titmouse in the distance catches your attention; you pause to scan the area for a glimpse of this small, silver songbird with its big, black eyes. It’s a glorious day in the Blue Ridge Mountains—your Elk River Club address means you’re just a short walk away from casting your favorite reel in the cool waters of the Elk River. Fishing has been a favorite pastime of yours; easy access to such fantastic trout and bass fishing is the cherry on top of an already exceptional community. Our member experience includes the state’s first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Har-Tru tennis courts, a pool and wellness complex, an Equestrian Center, hiking, fishing and more. For those eager to get knee-deep in refreshing mountain waters, here’s what you can expect to find when fishing at Elk River Club and beyond.
Within Our Waters
Are you wondering what kinds of fish are plentiful in the Elk River? Rainbow, native brook and brown trout abound. There are bream and rock bass in many of the ponds. Members take part in catch and release fly-fishing along the river here in our community. The Elk River is a natural resource and a dedicated trout fishery; our members are gracious stewards of this state treasure. In 2007, the Club completed an extensive river restoration project, with continuing selective deepening. Daily feeding and monitoring programs help maintain the health of the stream and fish.
Wildcat Lake
In nearby Banner Elk, Wildcat Lake on Hickory Nut Gap Road is a 13-acre lake accessible to the public. The town website describes the lake as an “old-fashioned swimming hole,” making for a lovely outing for all ages. The fishing dock is of particular interest, and the white sand beach and swimming pier round out their family-friendly activities (non-motorized boats, canoes and kayaks are permitted). Should your family need a bathhouse or picnic shelter, the adjacent Tufts Memorial Park is also open to the public.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
There are countless opportunities for hiking and fishing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Canoes are available for rental at the 47-acre Price Lake (inside Julian Price Memorial Park), and Price Park Boat Rentals has boats for rental. Hiking here ranges from easy to moderately strenuous, and overnight camping is an option, with close to 200 camping sites.
Elk River Club is a private mountain golf community in Western North Carolina with the first Signature Jack Nicklaus golf course in the state.
